Grapefruit is such a lovely light, refreshing essential oil, that it blends well with so many other different oils.

Grapefruit essential oil is the oil that is extracted from the peel of the grapefruit.  It is native to tropical Asia but is cultivated in warm sunny countries like California, Florida, and Cyprus.  Grapefruit is a top note oil, which means the fragrance is light, and distinctive, however, may not last long when blended with other top note oils.

Grapefruit essential oil recipes

Facial oil for dull & oily skin

Jojoba oil is ideal for oily skins as it balances the amount of sebum being produced, so can help relieve excess oil on the skin. Massage a few drops of the blend into the skin daily, preferably in the evening.

Uplifting shower spray

Keep in the bathroom to spray onto the shower floor and walls, before each shower.  The warm water will release the fragrance of the oils, allowing you to inhale the uplifting aromas. An ideal way to start the day!

  • 10ml witch hazel

What is grapefruit Essential oil good for?

Grapefruit essential oil is a very versatile oil and can be used for a variety of issues and conditions. Each essential oil has a unique chemical complex and therefore has a range of therapeutic actions. The therapeutic properties of grapefruit essential oil are;

  • Antiseptic – this means it is good to use to remove or prevent infections.
  • Astringent – grapefruit helps makes a really effective skin toner!
  • Depurative – removes toxins from the body – so making a great addition to detoxifying body or bath oils.
  • Diuretic – increases the production of urine, so very effective at reducing water retention or excess swelling in the body.
  • Digestive tonic – invigorates the digestive system, easing any issues with the digestive system.
  • Stimulant – invigorates and stimulates a particular area of the body or mind.
  • Tonic – invigorates the body and mind.
  • Uplifting – has a positive, uplifting effect on the mind.

Grapefruit for the skin

Grapefruit is an excellent essential oil for oily and dull skin and can be effective at treating spots and acne.  Grapefruit acts as an astringent, which means it has a tightening effect on the tissues.  This is particularly useful for helping to reduce the amount of sebum being secreted onto the surface of the skin. It is also useful for helping to heal damaged skin.

Grapefruit oil for detoxifying

Grapefruit has a good effect on the lymphatic system. Our lymphatic system is the system that deals with the removal and destruction of waste and toxins in the body, which can lead to us feeling unhealthy or more prone to illness.  Grapefruit helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite, which is effectively fatty deposits and waste sitting underneath the surface of the skin. A study showed that grapefruit oil inhibited the formation of fatty tissues. It also acts as a diuretic, meaning that it will help to reduce swelling on the skins tissues, that is associated with excess water and waste in the body.

Grapefruit for the mind

A lovely refreshing uplifting oil, grapefruit is really effective at promoting positive thoughts and feelings of euphoria, while also helping to relieve the symptoms of depression and stress. It can clear the mind and allow more focused thinking while suffering from stress. It can also help to balance mood swings. 

Grapefruit for immunity

Grapefruit is a very good oil to use to relieve the symptoms of and clear, colds and flu.  It helps to stimulate the immune system, so gives us a better protection against illness.

Grapefruit for tiredness

Grapefruit is a good oil to alleviate feelings of lethargy, especially morning tiredness, so is a good oil to wake up with.  It can also be effective at treating jet lag, and general fatigue.

Grapefruit for digestion

Grapefruit can be used to strengthen the digestive system, making it useful for those with a poor appetite, nausea after eating, or possible eating disorders.

precautions of grapefruit essential oil

Grapefruit is a safe oil to use, however if the extraction method is unknown it should be treated as phototoxic. This means that when applied to the skin, the area is more prone to burning, so direct sunlight should be avoided. The method of extraction for grapefruit is traditionally expression, however sometimes it is distilled. Distilled grapefruit oil is phototoxic.
