Do you struggle to wake up and get going in the morning? Do you long to wake up more easily in the morning and have more energy from the get-go?! Are you relying heavily on coffee – or other stimulants – to start your day?!
If you have answered any of these questions then it may be time to give some essential oils a go, to get you started in the morning.
We are going to look at some energising morning diffuser blends to use – from the minute you wake up – to ease into your day, more refreshed, energised, and focused.
Many different oils can help you energise and wake up in the morning, and studies have shown that citrus oils, particularly have a positive effect on the body and mind. My favourite oils in my morning diffuser blends and the most effective oils are;
- Orange
- Rosemary
- Basil

How to use essential oils for the morning
Diffuser
So, we have discussed using a diffuser for your essential oil blends for the morning, but if you have trouble waking up and getting going in the morning, you need to try and get the diffuser going early on.
I suggest keeping the diffuser next to your bed – on your bedside table – and adding in your chosen oils the night before. This ensures that everything is ready for the morning. So, just as you switch off your alarm, reach out and switch on your diffuser.
Then as you lie in bed, wake up, and eventually get up, the aromas are already filling your room, allowing you to benefit from them early on. Keep the diffuser on as you get washed, dressed, and clean your teeth – whatever your morning routine consists of – but just remember to switch it off when you leave.
Rollerball blend
If you simply don’t have the time to benefit from a diffuser, or you want to keep that awake feeling as you go about your day, then carry a rollerball bottle with y
ou. These are ideal to keep in your handbag or your pocket, to give you a boost of energy, and clear and refresh your mind. Use any of the blends given above, with the following recipe;
- 10ml amber rollerball bottle
- 9ml sweet almond oil
- 8 drops of essential oil (in total)

Shower spray
Another great way to use essential oils in the morning is to create a shower spray. This is a really simple way to benefit from the ‘wake-up’ properties of the oils. Simply blend your chosen oils with water and a little witch hazel, and use to spray around the shower before you get in. When you turn on the shower the aromas of the oils will be released and fill your bathroom.

The best essential oils to use in the morning
Let’s look at each oil in more detail, so you can see the wonderful effects they can have.
Orange
If I had to pick one essential oil to use in your morning diffuser blend it would be orange! A perfect essential oil to use in the morning, as it is uplifting, stimulating, and an anti-depressant. Orange promotes a positive outlook, refreshes the mind, and relieves a low mood or depression. The ideal base for any morning diffuser blend.
Rosemary
Another of my top picks for a morning diffuser blend. With a lovely herby fragrance, rosemary blends very well with many other essential oils. It helps to clear and focus the mind while helping to activate the brain and stimulating nerve endings. Rosemary also helps to relieve mental fatigue and lethargy.
Basil
Basil is a very uplifting essential oil and a great oil to clear and focus the mind – in fact, one of the best essential oils to do this! it has a very strong scent – like aniseed – so it is best blended with another lighter, fresher-smelling oil.
Clary sage
Clary sage is uplifting and a tonic which means it invigorates and gives strength to the body, while also promoting feelings of well-being and euphoria. Ideal for encouraging positive thoughts and energy in the morning.
Ginger
With a light, fresh, spicy fragrance ginger is stimulating and invigorates the body and the mind. It helps with lethargy and tiredness and aids with heightening the senses – ideal for a morning pick-me-up.
Grapefruit
A wonderful-smelling citrus oil Grapefruit is ideal for relieving morning tiredness. It is uplifting and refreshing so clears the mind and invigorates the body, while also creating feelings of euphoria. A great way to start the day!
Juniper
A sweet-smelling essential oil, that helps to clear and stimulate the mind. Juniper gives strength and stimulates the mind and body.
Lemon
A lovely refreshing and uplifting oil that clears and stimulates the mind, allowing for a clearer head and mind.
Peppermint
Peppermint really helps to wake up, refresh and clear the mind. It improves mental fatigue and and energises the body while cooling and calming the mind to keep brain fog at bay. Another perfect addition to a morning diffuser blend.
Precautions of using essential oil diffuser blends for the morning
Using these oils in a diffuser is usually safe. If you suffer from respiratory disorders or allergies, then start slowly. Just add one drop of each oil into your diffuser, and judge your reaction.
If you are using the essential oils in a rollerball bottle – and therefore applying them to the skin – there are a few precautions;
- Citrus oils of orange, grapefruit, and lemon, are phototoxic, so avoid direct sunlight on the area of application
- Clary sage and rosemary should be avoided during pregnancy
- Rosemary should be avoided by epileptics and those with high blood pressure
- Peppermint is incompatible with homeopathic medicines
